R&D lab at Sitem-Insel

This past Saturday, Spirecut organized a research and development lab at Sitem-Insel AG in Bern, marking an important milestone in our project, Novel Techniques of Percutaneous Sonography-Guided Surgical Operations (SonoSurgery).

With support from a grant received earlier this year, Spirecut is collaborating with Sovereign Medical Limited (UK) to enhance our incisionless surgical technique, using patented Sono-Instruments® for treating carpal tunnel and trigger finger. This innovative method allows for outpatient procedures in under 15 minutes, with no stitches required, enabling patients to resume normal activities the next day.

The initiative aims to reduce costs, improve efficiency, and accelerate patient recovery. We were pleased to welcome four surgeons and radiologists from the UK, alongside four Swiss surgeons, reinforcing the collaborative spirit of this R&D effort.

Special thanks to SMD Medical for providing ultrasound equipment, and to Gosia Greuter (Kula) and Julie Risse, PhD, MBA, for their excellent organization.

Next Steps:

  • Sovereign Medical Limited will continue working with a joint UK-Swiss expert panel to explore expanding the technique to conditions like Dupuytren disease, De Quervain, and tennis elbow.
  • A Delphi exercise will assess the technical and economic feasibility of these approaches.
  • The University of Southampton is developing a health economic model to guide further research and investment.

Our ultimate goal is a future submission to NICE for potential NHS adoption.
